1. Taal in Bedrijf (22/11, Eindhoven)

Taal in Bedrijf is h�t Vlaams-Nederlandse evenement op het gebied
van taal- en spraaktechnologie. Een ontmoetingsplatform voor
investeerders, managers, bestuurders, wetenschappers �n vooral de
gebruikers. Nieuwe kansen ontstaan door het samenbrengen van mensen
en organisaties die taal- en spraaktechnologie toepassen of willen
toepassen.

2. Computational Linguistics in the Netherlands (16/12, Amsterdam)

It is our pleasure to announce that the sixteenth CLIN meeting will
be hosted by the Faculties of Science and Humanities at the
University of Amsterdam. As usual, the language of the conference
will be English. Invited speakers: Edward Hovy (University of
Southern California) and Hermann Ney (Aachen University (RWTH)).
Researchers are invited to present work on all aspects of
computational linguistics, natural language processing and related
language and speech technologies. Authors interested in presenting
their work should submit an abstract in English. The abstract
should contain: a title; author name, address, affiliation, and
email address; a short outline of the paper (10-20 lines). Please
submit your abstract by email to: clin2005@science.uva.nl. Deadline
for abstract submission: November 4, 2005.
The local organization committee of this year's meeting consists
of Maarten de Rijke, Remko Scha, Khalil Sima'an and Rob van Son.
CLIN 2005 is generously sponsored by the Amsterdam Center for
Language and Communication, the Faculty of Science, the
Informatics Institute, and the Institute for Logic, Language and
Computation, all at the University of Amsterdam, together with
the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek

3. VGZ en Tweede Kamer laten hun websites praten
************************************************
Zorgverzekeraar VGZ gebruikt sinds 15 september op haar website
ReadSpeaker, waarmee de tekst aan de bezoeker voorgelezen wordt. De
technologie is zeer eenvoudig te gebruiken en vereist geen
specifieke kennis bij de gebruiker. Website-bezoekers klikken op de
speciale 'Lees Voor�-knop en de tekst op die pagina, of een
geselecteerde alinea wordt voorgelezen.
VGZ maakt hiermee haar internetpagina's toegankelijker voor mensen
met een leeshandicap zoals slechtzienden, dyslectici, mensen met een
verstandelijke handicap of analfabeten. Of gewoon voor iedereen die
liever luistert dan leest. Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat dit maar
liefst 20% van de Nederlandse bevolking betreft. De voorleesstem die
wordt gebruikt is vriendelijk en menselijk. ReadSpeaker is een van
oorsprong Zweeds bedrijf. Zorgverzekeraar VGZ gaat nu als eerste
Nederlandse onderneming de techniek toepassen op haar site.
Op de website van de Tweede Kamer is sinds 3 oktober eveneens een
programma beschikbaar dat het mogelijk maakt om teksten op de
website te laten voorlezen. Daarmee is de site de eerste overheids-
website van Nederland die deze mogelijkheid aanbiedt. Net als bij
VGZ is het doel om de internetsite toegankelijker te maken voor
mensen met een leeshandicap. Daarnaast is het programma handig voor
kinderen of voor mensen voor wie Nederlands bijvoorbeeld niet de
moedertaal is. Na een testperiode van 6 maanden wordt gekeken of het
programma beschikbaar blijft via de website van de Tweede Kamer.

4. Gratis update Nederlandse proofing tools Polderland
******************************************************
Op 15 oktober 2005 is de nieuwe spelling ingegaan. Als leverancier
van de offici�le Nederlandse Proofing Tools heeft Polderland een
update gemaakt van de Nederlandse spellingcontrole,
grammaticacontrole en de thesaurus in Microsoft� Office.
Als u op dit moment beschikt over Nederlandse Proofing Tools in
Microsoft� Office, dan kunt u op de website van Polderland gratis
een update downloaden (voor Office 97 en hoger).
Deze update werkt alleen als u al (��n van) de standaard
Nederlandse Proofing Tools ge�nstalleerd heeft. Heeft u nog geen
Nederlandse Proofing Tools dan kunt u deze bestellen via de
webwinkel.

5. AskNow lanceert nieuwe applicatie voor zorgverzekeraars

AskNow, leverancier van selfservice-oplossingen en in het bijzonder
Web Selfservice, E-mail Response Management en Agent Support, heeft
een nieuwe applicatie ontwikkeld voor de zorgverzekeraars: AskNow
Zorg4You. Op basis van natuurlijke taaltechnologie kunnen klanten
laagdrempelig en in eigen woorden via de website vragen stellen over
de invoering van de nieuwe basisverzekering.
Met Zorg4You kan een snelle stijging van het serviceniveau worden
gerealiseerd: in de applicatie zijn honderden vragen en antwoorden
op het gebied van de nieuwe zorgverzekering voorgedefinieerd. AskNow
levert de Zorg applicatie compleet met 'front-end', zodat de
zorgverzekeraar alleen nog zijn logo hoeft toe te voegen.
De vragen en antwoorden in Zorg4You zijn gebaseerd op de
veelgestelde vragen op de website www.denieuwezorgverzekering.nl.
Een belangrijk voordeel is dat zorgverzekeraars hun eigen vragen
kunnen toevoegen en de huidige antwoorden kunnen wijzigen.
De lancering van Zorg4You is precies op tijd voor de grote drukte
die optreedt in verband met de nieuwe zorgverzekering. Het aantal
klantcontacten bij de zorgverzekeraars neemt de komende maanden fors
toe. De stijging van het aantal klantcontacten leidt vaak tot een
daling van het serviceniveau aan de cli�nten. Het gevolg: ontevreden
cli�nten, een sterk verminderde kans op commercieel succes en
overbelaste contactcentermedewerkers.

6. Vacatures postdoc en promovendus (Universiteit Twente)

2 Research positions in audio mining project CHoral: a postdoc
position, and a PhD position.
The successful applicants will join the project �CHoral: access to
oral history�, running in the research programme CATCH which is
funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
The project team will carry out a research agenda that aims to
advance in the state-of-the-art in Spoken Document Retrieval.
The project will start on 1 January 2006, or as soon as possible
thereafter. The University of Twente will act as employer. The
project team will be housed within the premises of the project's
heritage partner, the Municipal Archives of Rotterdam.
Postdoc candidates should have a background in at least two of the
following areas: speech recognition, information retrieval, audio-
visual archiving, information management for cultural heritage
collections. Proficiency in Dutch is a plus. The expertise gained
and previous experience should demonstrate the candidate's ability
to fulfil a coordinating role in the project, to act as trait
d'union between the project PhD, the project supervisors, the
project's software engineer(s) and the target user groups.
PhD candidates should have affinity and experience with speech and
language technology, demonstrated by a degree in e.g., phonetics,
computational linguistics, computer science. Basic knowledge of
Dutch is a must, good programming skills will be needed to
collaborate effectively with the software engineers.

7. Vacature junior onderzoeker spraakherkenning (KU Leuven)

PROJECT TITLE: "DATA DRIVEN SPEECH RECOGNITION"
A 1yr. research position is available in the framework of FWO
research project �Data Driven Speech Recognition� (Datagedreven
Spraakherkenning).
The goal of the work is to explore methodologies for noise
robustness within the framework of the recently developed template
based recognizer at ESAT. The template based recognizer opens new
avenues for approaching the problem of noise robustness.
The position is intended for a junior researcher, preferably an
Electrical engineer with a background in signal processing. Apart
from the signal processing aspect, the work will involve a
significant amount of experimentation requiring some skills in
programming, primarily at the scripting level.
The initial term is for one year starting immediately or 1.1.2006 at
the latest, but could be extended to a full PhD track.

8. Promotieplaats spraakanalyse (UL Brussel)

PhD Position in Numerical Simulation and Analysis of Speech.
A doctoral student position is available at the department "Signals
and Waves" of the Faculty of Engineering at Universit� Libre de
Bruxelles. The framework of the position is an European FET project
devoted to audivisual-to-articulatory inversion, which is the
estimation of the shape of the vocal tract on the base of the speech
signal. Institutions participating in the project are the following:
LORIA (Nancy), ENST (Paris), KTH (Stockholm), National Technical
University (Athens) and ULB (Brussels).
Candidates should have a degree in engineering or physics and be
interested in numerical simulation and analysis of speech.

9. Vacature onderzoeker computerlingu�stiek/fonetiek (RU Groningen)

Researcher/postdoc Computational Linguistics or Phonetics
Faculty of Arts, University of Groningen (The Netherlands) 80%-100%
Applications are invited for a researcher/postdoc position at the
Faculty of Arts, in the research institute Center for Language and
Cognition Groningen. The successful applicant will join the project
�Linguistic determinants of mutual intelligibility in Scandinavia�
which is funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific
Research (NWO). The aim of the project is to refine newly developed
computational methods in order to quantify communicatively relevant
similarity between closely related languages such as the
Scandinavian languages. The similarity measurements will be used to
develop a model for predicting and explaining mutual
intelligibility.
The candidate should have a degree in computational linguistics or a
field that trains in linguistics and/or computing. Programming
experience is essential. Preference will be given to the candidate
who can offer in addition one or more of the following: an interest
in experimental research, experience with speech manipulation and
speech processing programs (e.g. PRAAT), phonetic and statistical
knowledge, publication skills and a desire to publish, self
motivation, the ability to work collaboratively, and an accurate way
of working. Proficiency in one of the Scandinavian languages is a
plus.
The project will start on 1 January 2006 or as soon as possible
