1. VAN BENTHEM BENOEMD TOT UNIVERSITEITSHOOGLERAAR
**************************************************
Prof. dr. Johan F.A.K. van Benthem (1949) is per 1 september 2003
benoemd tot universiteitshoogleraar aan de Universiteit van
Amsterdam (UvA). Van Benthem heeft als aandachtsgebied de logica en
haar toepassingen in de taalkunde, filosofie, informatica en
cognitiewetenschap. Hij zal het interdisciplinair onderzoek tussen
de alfa-, gamma- en b�ta-disciplines op het gebied van informatie-
en cognitiewetenschappen verder bevorderen. Dat laatste, nog jonge,
vakgebied beslaat onder meer taal, waarneming, aandacht, redeneren,
denken, leren en communicatie.
Het is de taak van universiteitshoogleraren om een impuls te geven
aan wetenschappelijke ontwikkelingen die de traditionele disciplines
overstijgen en een belangrijke bijdrage te leveren aan de
profilering van de universiteit. Ze zijn niet verbonden aan ��n
bepaald vakgebied of faculteit.
Van Benthem is een internationaal erkende toponderzoeker op het
gebied van de logica en haar toepassingen. Hij studeerde in 1972 en
1973 cum laude af in de studies Wiskunde en Wijsbegeerte aan de
Universiteit van Amsterdam. In 1977 promoveerde hij aan deze
universiteit. Van 1977 tot 1986 was hij lector en later hoogleraar
Symbolische logica aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. In 1986 werd
van Benthem hoogleraar Wiskundige logica en wijsbegeerte der
wiskunde aan de UvA. Voorts bezet hij sinds 1991 de Bonsall Visiting
Chair of Humanities aan Stanford University, California (VS). Sinds
1991 is hij lid van de Academia Europaea, en sinds 1992 van de
Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen. Van Benthem
stond aan de wieg van het Instituut for Logic Language and
Computation (ILLC), het onderzoeksinstituut van de UvA waarin
wetenschappers op het gebied van logica, informatica en wijsbegeerte
samenwerken.

3. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS CLIN 2003

The 14th Meeting of Computational Linguistics in the Netherlands
Friday, December 19, 2003 - University of Antwerp (Belgium)
We are happy to announce the fourteenth CLIN meeting, which will be
hosted by the Centre of Dutch Language and Speech at the University
of Antwerp. The language of the conference will be English.
KEYNOTE LECTURE: Thorsten Brants, Google Inc., USA.
Researchers are invited to present papers on all aspects of
computational linguistics. Authors should submit an abstract in
English. The abstract should contain: a title; your name, address,
affiliation, and email address; a short outline of the paper (10-20
lines). We strongly encourage authors to use the on-line submission
form on the CLIN 2003 website (http://cnts.uia.ac.be/clin2003/). If
you send your abstract by email (to bart.decadt@ua.ac.be), please

5. PROMOTIEPLAATS TWENTE

The Language, Knowledge and Interaction (TKI) research group of the
University of Twente (http://parlevink.cs.utwente.nl/) is a
multidisciplinary group of about 35 enthusiastic researchers in the
fields of multimodal human-computer interaction, language and speech
technology, virtual reality and agent technology. The group is
currently looking for a Ph.D. student, fulltime, (4 years) for the
project "Interactive Multimodal Output Generation" (IMOGEN).
The IMOGEN project aims at the development and implementation of
efficient new models for the generation of multimodal output
combining language, speech and graphics. A module will be developed
for information presentation in a multimodal question-answering
system, where the information to be presented is (partially)
provided by a QA-component as the result of a user's query.
The Ph.D. student will work on the IMOGEN subproject focusing on
multimodal, adaptive output generation. The research will culminate
in the writing and defense of a Ph.D. thesis.
Applicants should have a Master's degree in computer science,
computational linguistics, or cognitive science. Programming
experience (C/C++/Perl/Java, applications, system design) is
required. Experience with language generation or multimodal
interfaces is a pro. Applicants should have, or be willing to
develop, active knowledge of spoken and written Dutch.

6. VACATURE: SENIOR MANAGER R&D EMBEDDED ASR

To be responsible for managing and leading the Embedded R&D
department of an international speech technology firm. Essential to
have a thorough knowledge of ASR, from an engineering and an
implementation point of view with at least 10 years of technical
experience in a technology-developing company.
We are looking for an experienced people and project manager who
will have a key role in outlining the strategic paths of the ASR
operation and development. Background should include a technical
university degree preferably a PhD or equivalent. Automotive
industry experience would be beneficial. The role will be
