1. STEVIN: oproep voor educatieve activiteiten (sluitingsdatum 15 mei)

STEVIN is een meerjarig onderzoeks- en stimuleringsprogramma voor
Nederlandstalige taal- en spraaktechnologie dat gezamenlijk door de
Vlaamse en Nederlandse overheid wordt gefinancierd. In het kader van
het STEVIN-programma kunnen nu subsidies voor educatieve activiteiten
worden aangevraagd. De educatieve activiteiten (min. 3 maanden en max.
12 maanden) zijn bedoeld om in een educatieve omgeving
(onderwijsinstellingen, musea, enz.) schoolgaande jongeren en
beginnende studenten bewust te maken van de mogelijkheden van taal- en
spraaktechnologie. Het STEVIN-programma stelt tot en met 2009 ieder
jaar maximaal 55.000 euro beschikbaar voor educatieve activiteiten
(projecten). In 2008 wordt een enkele oproep opengesteld. De
eerstkomende indiendatum is 15 mei.

2. Spraaktraining via internet wint Nationale Zorgvernieuwingsprijs

De Sint Maartenskliniek in Nijmegen is uitgeroepen tot winnaar van de
Nationale Zorgvernieuwingsprijs. De kliniek wil spraaktherapie via
internet inzetten bij de revalidatie van mensen met neurologisch
letsel, zoals afasie of de ziekte van Parkinson. Die aanpak vergroot
hun kwaliteit van leven. Lilian Beijer ontving namens de kliniek op 6
maart de prijs van 70.000 euro uit handen van juryvoorzitter Ria
Bremer.

3. Nederlands leren spreken met hulp van de computer

De Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen en de Universiteit Antwerpen hebben
in het STEVIN-programma een half miljoen euro subsidie gekregen om in
samenwerking met Polderland Language & Speech Technology een
computersysteem te ontwikkelen waarmee de spreekvaardigheid van
leerders van het Nederlands kan worden getraind. Het systeem wordt
ontwikkeld binnen het project DISCO (Development and Integration of
Speech technology into COurseware for language learning) en zal
automatisch feedback geven over uitspraak, morfologie, en syntaxis.
Voor verwerking van de gesproken uitingen van de taalleerder wordt
gebruik gemaakt van automatische spraakherkenning.

4. Nieuwe versie Vox-systeem voor spraaksynthese

Nomadic Solutions heeft een nieuwe versie uitgebracht van het systeem
Vox, een systeem dat geschreven tekst omzet naar spraak. Versie 2.0
kan nu overweg met zes talen, waaronder het Nederlands. De nieuwe
versie is onlangs gepresenteerd op de CeBIT-beurs in Hannover en kan
teksten ontvangen via SMS, GPRS, WiFi en Bluetooth.

5. Q-go en NTR Global zetten de telefoon buitenspel

Q-go, leverancier van Natural Language Search software (NLS-software),
gaat een partnerschap aan met NTR Global. NTR Global houdt zich
ondermeer bezig met live chat. De twee willen op deze manier hun
klanten beter bedienen; Q-go zorgt ervoor dat consumenten de juiste
informatie kunnen vinden met de NLS-software en NTR Global vult dat
aan met het aanbieden van live chat-mogelijkheden.

6. Strategisch partnerschap Language Weaver en Reverso

Language Weaver gaat een strategisch partnerschap aan met Reverso
(Softissimo). Language Weaver is een software-bedrijf dat enterprise
software ontwikkelt voor automatische vertaling en Reverso levert
oplossingen voor corporate- en web-vertalingen. Door het partnerschap
wordt de aanwezigheid van Language Weaver op de internationale
business-to-business-markt voor vertalen vergroot. Voor Reverso
betekent het partnerschap de beschikking over nieuwe technologie en
extra taalparen voor de vertaaldiensten van Reverso.

7. VoiceCorp is de nieuwe distributeur van ReadSpeaker

VoiceCorp is vanaf 1 januari de nieuwe distributeur voor alle
ReadSpeaker producten, zoals LeesVoor (een voorleesdienst voor
websites) en Podcaster. De ReadSpeaker producten blijven exact gelijk.
Ook de mensen achter het product zijn dezelfde, zowel in Nederland als
internationaal. Alleen de naam verandert.
VoiceCorp is het resultaat van het samenvoegen van de afdelingen
development, sales, management, hosting, ondersteuning en innovatie
van de bedrijven achter ReadSpeaker onder één dak.

8. Nuance introduceert Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical 9

Nuance heeft de Nederlandse en Franse versie aangekondigd van Dragon
NaturallySpeaking Medical 9, een spraakherkenningspakket dat het
gebruik van elektronische medische dossiers gebruiksvriendelijker
maakt voor de zorgverleners.

9. Vacature onderzoeksaanstelling speech processing (UGent, Gent)

Background
Since March 2005, the universities of Leuven, Gent, Antwerp and
Brussels have joined forces in a big research project, called SPACE
(SPeech Algorithms for Clinical and Educational applications). The
project aims at contributing to the broader application of speech
technology in educational and therapeutic software tools. More
specifically, it pursues the automatic detection and classification of
reading errors in the context of an automatic reading tutor, and the
objective assessment of disordered speech (e.g. speech of the deaf,
dysarthric speech, ...) in the context of computer assisted speech
therapy assessment. Specific for the target applications is that the
speech is either grammatically and lexically incorrect or a-typically
pronounced. Therefore, standard technology cannot be applied as such
in these applications.
Job description
The person we are looking for will be in charge of the data-driven
development of word mispronunciation models that can predict expected
reading errors in the context of a reading tutor. These models must be
integrated in the linguistic model of the prompted utterance, and
achieve that the speech recognizer becomes more specific in its
detection and classification of presumed errors than a recognizer
which is using a more traditional linguistic model with context-
independent garbage and deletion arcs. A challenge is also to make
the mispronunciation model adaptive to the progress made by the user.

In order to strengthen our Embedded ASR Research team, we are looking
for a:
RESEARCH ENGINEER SPEECH DIALOGUE SYSTEMS
As part of our team, you will be creating speech technologies for
embedded applications varying from simple command and control tasks up
to natural language speech dialogues on mobile and automotive
platforms.
OVERVIEW:
-You will work in Nuance's Embedded ASR research and production team,
creating technology, tools and runtime software to enable our
customers develop embedded speech applications. In our team of speech
and language experts, you will work on natural language dialogue
systems that define the state of the art.
- You will work at Nuance's International Headquarters in Merelbeke, a
small town just 5km away from the heart of the picturesque city of
Ghent, in the Flanders region of Belgium. Ghent has one of the most
spectacular historic town centers of Europe and is known for its
unique vibrant yet cozy charm, and is home to a large international
university.
- You will work in an international company and cooperate with people
on various locations including in Europe, America, and Asia. You may
occasionally be asked to travel.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- You will work on the development of cutting edge natural language
dialogue and speech recognition technologies for automotive embedded
systems and mobile devices.
- You will design, implement, evaluate, optimize, and test new
algorithms and tools for our speech recognition systems, both for
research prototypes and deployed products, including all aspects of
dialogue systems design, such as architecture, natural language
understanding, dialogue modeling, statistical framework, and so forth.
- You will help the engine process multi-lingual natural and
spontaneous speech in various noise conditions, given the challenging
memory and processing power constraints of the embedded world.

11. Vacatures computationeel taalkundige (UvT, Tilburg)

Tilburg University (The Netherlands) is looking for two new
enthusiastic and competent colleagues, one at PhD and one at Post-doc
level:

POST-DOC RESEARCHER
Vacancy number 500.08.07, 3 years, parttime (80%)
These positions are part of the larger project "Bridging the gap
between psycholinguistics and computational linguistics: The case of
referring expressions, funded by a Vici grant from the Netherlands
Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), awarded to Emiel Krahmer.
In spring 2009, a second PhD and a second Post-doc researcher will be
hired, to complete the research team for this project.
Requirements
- For one position, we seek a candidate with a background in
psycholinguistics, communication & information sciences, social
sciences or some related area, with experience in doing experiments,
and preferably with a proven interest in either speech production,
non-
verbal communication, scene perception or adaptation.
- For the other position we are looking for a researcher with a
background in computational linguistics, computer science or some
related area, with programming experience and preferably with a proven
interest in natural language generation or modeling human language
production.
- Both positions can be filled at the PhD and at the Post-doc level.
