2. Fluency introduceert spraaksynthese met natuurlijke intonatie
*****************************************************************
De Nederlandstalige tekst-naar-spraaksoftware van Fluency is
voorzien van natuurlijke intonatie. Dit houdt in dat voor elke zin
of deelzin de best passende melodie wordt gekozen uit een database
met intonatiepatronen van een menselijke spreker.
De prosodische variatie die hiermee ontstaat, maakt met name langere
teksten prettiger om naar te luisteren. En, doordat de aandacht van
de gebruiker meer geprikkeld wordt, leidt het tevens tot een beter
tekstbegrip.
De nieuwe intonatiemodule is onderdeel van Fluency TTS 4.0 (alle
versies), maar is ook beschikbaar in een nieuwe versie van Spika,
een hulpmiddel voor dyslectische kinderen.

3. Acapela lanceert Infovox iVox voor Mac OS X
**********************************************
Acapela en haar partner AssistiveWare lanceerden in september een
nieuwe meertalige vocale oplossing voor Mac OS X bestemd voor
blinden en slechtzienden: Infovox iVox. Infovox iVox is een
oplossing die toestaat te genieten van de hoogkwalitatieve stemmen
van Acapela in alle compatibele toepassingen met de Speech Manager
van Mac OS X: TextEdit, Preview, Acrobat Reader, Proloquo,
AppleWorks, etc., alsmede verschillende educatieve programmas.
Infovox iVox kan gebruikt worden met de tekstlezer VoiceOver,
geïntegreerd in Tiger. Het product functioneert met hetzelfde gemak
op de Mac PowerPC en de Mac Intel.
De op dit moment beschikbare talen zijn: Nederlands, Vlaams, Frans,
Amerikaans en Brits Engels, Duits, Italiaans, Spaans, Portugees,
Noors en Zweeds. Acapela biedt een ruime keuze aan hoogkwalitatieve
stemmen in iedere taal, zowel mannelijk als vrouwelijk.
"Dankzij onze samenwerking met Acapela Group hebben de gebruikers
van Mac OS X wereldwijd eindelijk de beschikking over stemmen die
nog niet eerder gecreëerd zijn voor de Mac," zegt David Niemeijer,

4. MultiCorpora opent Europees kantoor in Brussel

Quebec, officially moved into its new office at 117 Stassart,

5. Voxtron lanceert TeleButler 6.0 en werkt mee aan rampenoefening

On November 1st, TeleButler 6.0 has been released. TeleButler is a
telephony receptionist solution treating all incoming calls fast,
friendly, efficiently and more over: 24 hours a day - 7 days a week.
TeleButler welcomes callers, in different languages, lets them
choose between different options in a menu, transfers to employees,
registers voice mail messages, sends faxes and builds applications
in which data from external databases can be used. In includes
a text-to-speech module for Dutch.
On October 14th, Brussels Airport had its big biennial 'crash test
exercise'. For the first time the Belgian Military were involved and
the event was evaluated by NATO procedures. Thanks to the Voxtron
Alarm Generator System all necessary people (approx. 100) were
notified (in the 2 Belgian national languages, Dutch and French)
within 10-12 minutes by using 12 outgoing telephone lines, 4 fax
lines, gsm, sms, pager and e-mail. During this emergency test all
involved departments/persons were kept up-to-date about the status
of the incident.
This tailor-made application is used as an example for other
airports and similar organizations to optimize their emergency
plans. Brussels Airport uses the Alarm Server when an airplane has
problems, when the ground units should be urged to clear runways
from snow or any other hazard, etc.
Voxtron developed the Alarm Server to be able to inform all
necessary people in a very short time. People can be notified via
telephone (voice), SMS, e-mail, pager or fax. Depending on the type
of alarm, different groups of people will be notified and in order
of the priority, allocated. Not just alarms can be given, but the
system can also be used to give specific information and remind
people. Any company that needs to inform a lot of people in a short
time, might benefit from the Alarm Server.

7. Vacature promovendus CLST (Nijmegen)
***************************************
Acquisition of Communication and Recognition Skills (ACORNS) is a
highy ambituous project, financed by the European Commission, which
aims to develop a computer simulation of the way in which young
children acquire their native language. For this project we are
looking for a PhD candidate who will be based at the Centre for
Language and Speech Technology at the Radboud University Nijmegen.
The task of the PhD student will be to develop an autonomous
language acquisition system by integrating software modules that are
built by other partners of the project consortium. Further s/he will
conduct experiments with the system in order to evoke adequate
reactions from the system to audio-visual input. On the basis of the
feedback to the reactions, the system should learn to recognise
words and their meanings in speech signals.
The PhD student will have the opportunity to conduct part of the
research in the lab of one of the ACORN Consortium members in
Belgium, Great Brittain, Sweden, Finland, or the USA.
A successful candidate must have a strong background in informatics,
cognitive sciences, AI, and preferably signal processing and pattern
recognition. Due to the international context of the project,
excellent coomunication skills in English are essential, as well as
a good record of collaboration in teams. Candidates must be already
authorized to work in the EU.
